It's easy to become overwhelmed with choices when you're planning to start with a fitness routine. Two of the biggest workout options competing for our attention nowadays are Zumba and well-equipped gyms. Both seem to be equally effective and popular. Which one should you choose? We have a quick checklist to help you decide:
1) Quick results Vs Long Term Results
Zumba is an aerobic exercise that’s vigorous by nature. An hour of Zumba can help you lose between 350 to 650 calories. If you're looking for quick results, namely weight loss, then Zumba is the perfect option.
On the other hand, if you wish to tone up and build muscle, increase your resting metabolic levels, and lose weight, then working out in the gym is the way to go. 30 minutes in the gym helps you expend between 220 to 390 calories.
2) Fun Workout Vs Serious Workout
Zumba is a fun workout when compared to working out at the gym. In fact, it's so much fun that you barely notice the full body workout you're receiving.
Gyms, on the other hand, offer certain benefits that you can't receive in a Zumba class. You have a dedicated space with the required training equipment. Then there's the benefit of having a gym instructor or personal trainer who's able to pay attention to you and even create tailored fitness programs for you.
Zumba is a vigorous physical activity, therefore you have to be relatively fit to start a Zumba class. However, you can start hitting the gym even if you're unfit. A personal trainer can develop a routine that suits you, track your progress and increase the level of intensity as your fitness level improves.
3) Socialising Vs Solitary
If you like socializing, then Zumba is a smart choice. Gyms are not necessarily solitary environments, but you can opt for solo workouts or come in when no one is around if you're keen on that. Zumba classes don't afford you that luxury - you have to reach on time to join the session with everyone else or miss out on classes. If you've still not decided which one to choose, we suggest you mix in a few Zumba classes with your gym workouts to see how it goes. Any exercise is better than no exercise. Therefore, get your workout clothes and hit the gym. Or the Zumba class!
