Hot Workout Trends: MMA

What is MMA?

MMA or Mixed Martial Arts is one of the fastest growing sports that has also become a hot new fitness trend. Much as the name suggests, MMA is a combat sport that combines disciplines from various martial arts like Karate, Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do along with Olympic sports like Wrestling, Judo and Kick-boxing.

History of MMA

The earliest form of a mixed martial art was practiced over 6000 years ago by Chinese military forces. The techniques used then included moves like finger locks, leg locks, leg sweeps and joint locks. It was an ancient style of kung-fu and wrestling.

In Greece, there was a similar sport called Pankration that involved striking and grappling poses similar to the modern version of MMA. Since then, MMA has steadily been incorporating more techniques from various martial arts forms and growing as a sport for several centuries now.

Why is it popular as a fitness regimen?

If you have ever seen an MMA fighter, it’s instantly obvious that they are in absolute peak form. Training for MMA pushes your body to limits it has only dreamed of before. Now imagine getting to that level without the hardest part of being an MMA fighter – the roughhousing and contact. Fitness studios that conduct MMA training classes have a safe, non-contact environment. This means you get to reap all the benefits of training like an MMA fighter without any of the cuts, scrapes or bruises. Win-win!

Thanks to the grappling and striking involved in MMA, these workouts develop every muscle in your body – from your core to your arms and legs. It also loosens you up and makes you much more flexible. Using so many muscles all in one workout session means you also burn more calories than any other exercise in the same time period. This makes MMA an incredibly time-efficient workout program.
